Olympia, das berühmte und umstrittene Gemälde von Édouard Manet, erregte im 19. Jahrhundert Aufsehen, weil es den nackten menschlichen Körper so zeigte, wie er ist, und damit gegen den ästhetischen Kanon der Zeit und die Idealisierung der weiblichen Figur in der Kunst verstieß.

Inspiriert von dieser Tatsache untersucht Arenas in ihrer laufenden Forschung, wie dominante Narrative in der Kunstgeschichte unser heutiges Verständnis von Geschlechtsidentität und Körperbild in westlichen Kulturen beeinflusst haben. „check your body at the door" ist eine Solo-Performance, in der die Künstlerin Iria Arenas in Zusammenarbeit mit der Choreografin Aura Antikainen das erste Ergebnis dieser Forschung präsentiert.
Mit Hilfe des House Dance, einer in den 70er Jahren in Chicago entstandenen sozialen Tanzform, wird ein Rahmen geschaffen, in dem ein zärtlicher und humorvoller Blick auf Körperstereotypen, Tanz und Performance zusammenkommen, um die Einzigartigkeit der menschlichen Figur zu zeigen und über die Klischees und bestimmte normative Werte hinauszuwachsen, die unsere Realitäten in der Vergangenheit so sehr eingeschränkt haben und deren Erbe auch heute noch einen großen Einfluss auf unsere Gesellschaft hat.

Olympia, Édouard Manet's famous and controversial painting, caused a stir in the 19th century for showing the naked human body as it is, breaking with the aesthetic canons of the time and with the idealisation of the female figure in art.
Inspired by this fact, Arenas' ongoing research explores how dominant narratives in art history have influenced our current understanding of gender identity and body image in Western cultures. “check your body at the door” is a solo performance in which the artist Iria Arenas in collaboration with the choreographer Aura Antikainen presents the first outcome of this research.
By means of House Dance, a social dance form born in Chicago in the 70s, a framework is stablished in which tender and humorous gaze on body stereotypes, dance and performance come together to show the singularity of the human figure, expanding beyond the clichés and certain normative values that so constrained our realities in the past and whose legacy continues to have a great impact on our society today.
